The environmental management system at Cloud Peak Energy incorporates elements that continue to be certified under ISO-14001 standards since 2005. The program consists of a system of policies, objectives and targets:
- Accounting for legal requirements, voluntary commitments beyond legal environmental compliance, and significant environmental aspects
- Facilitating environmental protection and prevention of pollution in balance with socio-economic needs
- Incorporating environmental considerations into Cloud Peak business planning and decisions
- Followed by all persons working for or on behalf of Cloud Peak
- The system incorporates:
- Commitment from all levels and functions of the organization, particularly top management, for establishment and continual improvement of a system that controls and minimizes potential environmental impacts of the operation
- Identification of the environmental aspects of operational activities, products and services that can be controlled and/or influenced, and developed management and control strategies for those determined to have potential significance
- Availability of resources essential to establish, implement, maintain and improve the environmental management system
- Defined, documented and communicated roles, responsibilities and authorities in order to facilitate effective environmental management
- Established, implemented and maintained procedures to identify and address potential emergency or incident situations that can have environmental impacts
- Internal monitoring procedures to measure performance and key characteristics of the operation that can have a significant environmental impact
- Internal auditing procedures to evaluate the performance of the environmental management system and compliance with legal and other requirements
- Specific procedures to address actual and potential nonconformance with legal and other requirements
- Procedures for top management review of the suitability, adequacy and effectiveness of the environmental management system
